On 17th of May 2024, Kenya and the United States released a Joint Statement after the Fifth Round of U.S.-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership Negotiations.
In the statement, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade, and Industry Rebecca Miano and her US counterpart Trade Representative Katherine Tai, emphasised their continued dedication to ensuring that STIP would be concluded by the end of 2024.
They noted that negotiations had made meaningful progress across key areas of interest, including anticorruption, MSMEs, services domestic regulation, and an initial segment of agriculture-related provisions aimed at facilitating trade, advancing food security, promoting transparency, and preventing bribery and corruption.
The statement also signalled that negotiations would continue, to enable increased investment by addressing “sustainable and inclusive economic growth, workers’ rights, environmental and climate objectives, and African regional economic integration.”
